We had the opportunity to sit down with David Keren and speak with him about his 16 years as the Director of Nativ. He started with USY in 1985 as the Shaliach for the CHUSY region, and stayed for 3 years. When he returned to Israel, he started USY High. Shortly after, he was offered the position as Nativ Director. Since then he has had the privilege to work with hundreds of students during the most critical time of their life. David points out, in today’s Judaism, exploring Israel in person in groups is the most effective way to build ties with Israel and strengthen the commitment to Jewish life. Bogrei Nativ says this one year was the most impactful year of their life. Nativ was the most effective and meaningful Jewish experience that they ever had. Here are other insights from David.

Highlights from Nativ: David’s highlight was his opportunity to work with Bogrei Nativ as staff. He could watch them first hand making a difference in the lives of the students in the same program they had completed. He loved watching them grow and become influential leaders.

Funny memory: In 1995 during Shacharit one morning, a madrich named Josh asked to make an announcement. He stood up proudly and announced “I’m engaged!” All the Nativers were very excited and started singing and dancing. And then the other madrich, Harold, smiled and announced, “I’m also engaged!” Everyone was so shocked and started laughing and cheering, and then they danced and sang all over again.

Something he learned from Nativers: He shouldn’t judge people based on previous behaviors. He should give them a chance. The most challenging students always became the most caring, committed, and devoted. He trusted the Nativers with the freedom to explore and experience on their own. This is what created the most meaningful and lasting experiences.

Message to Bogrei Nativ: Keep the strong connection you developed during Nativ. Visit Israel as often as possible. Visit and maintain ties with the families you know. Send your kids to Israel to experience on their own, it is the greatest gift you can provide them.
